Installation Standards — How We Build Decks That Last

At Witter Construction, we believe a great deck is more than just boards and rails—it’s a carefully engineered system built to last. Every project is guided by proven construction standards, thoughtful planning, and attention to detail, ensuring your deck is safe, comfortable, and beautiful for years to come.

Built Beyond Code

  • We exceed building codes, focusing on long-term performance.

  • Decks are designed to handle real-world use: furniture, gatherings, kids, and pets.

  • Structural integrity, comfort underfoot, and safety are always our top priorities

structural framing standards

  • Posts: Minimum 4×6 posts for decks below 4’ above grade, 6x6 posts for anything higher. Composite railing gets 4×4 cedar posts integrated into the frame for extra strength.

  • Beams: Minimum Doubled 2×8, sized for load support.

  • Joists & Subframe: Proper spacing for minimal flex, long-term durability.

  • Fastening: all framing connections are fastened with galvanized framing nails for sheer strength & composite deck screws to pull everything tight and square.

  • Each framing element is measured and installed for maximum stability and lifespan.

Ground Preparation & Longevity Standards

Proper ground preparation supports long-term performance, drainage, and a clean under-deck appearance.

Weed Barrier: Heavy-duty plastic barrier installed beneath the deck to reduce weed growth and maintenance.

Gravel Base: 6A washed stone applied over the barrier to improve drainage, airflow, and provide a stable, long-lasting foundation.

Landscape Perimeter: 4×4 timber perimeter installed to contain gravel and define the under-deck area. Included with gravel systems unless skirting or fascia extends to grade.

Installation Note: Recommended for elevated decks, low-clearance decks, and walkout basements to enhance durability, drainage, and aesthetics.

Decking Installation Standards

Composite and PVC decking perform best when installed with precision and consistency. As a Platinum-level TimberTech Pro, we follow manufacturer-recommended installation methods and use specialized tools designed specifically for composite / pvc decking to ensure long-term performance and a clean, uniform finish.

Our decking standards include:

  • Consistent board spacing maintained using manufacturer-approved spacing tools and fastener systems, allowing for proper expansion and contraction

  • Hidden fastening systems, including CAMO tools where appropriate, for secure attachment and a seamless surface with no exposed screws

  • Purpose-built installation tools that improve alignment, speed, and accuracy—reducing variability and ensuring consistent results across the entire deck

  • Intentional board layout and seam planning to create balanced sightlines and minimize visual breaks

  • Attention to drainage and airflow beneath the deck surface to support durability and long-term performance

By combining proven installation techniques with professional-grade tools, we’re able to deliver a deck surface that feels solid underfoot, looks clean and refined, and continues to perform as intended for years to come.
